Ep 176 What’s the Point of the Midrash – Toledot 2016

In this episode I talk with Eitan Press about the Voice of Jacob and the Hands of Esav

Midrash Rabbah – Genesis 65:20

20. AND JACOB WENT NEAR UNTO ISAAC HIS FATHER; AND HE FELT HIM, AND SAID: THE VOICE IS THE VOICE OF JACOB (XXVII, 22): hark, tis the voice of a wise man, while the hands are of those that strip the dead!

Another interpretation of THE VOlCE IS THE VOICE OF JACOB: Jacob wields power only by his voice; BUT THE HANDS ARE THE HANDS OF ESAU: Esau wields dominion only by his hands.

R. Phinehas gave another interpretation of THE VOICE IS THE VOICE OF JACOB: when the voice of Jacob withdraws within itself, then THE HANDS ARE THE HANDS OF ESAU: One beckons to him, and he comes [to attack Israel].

R. Berekiah gave another interpretation of THE VOICE IS THE VOICE OF JACOB: when Jacob speaks wrathfully with his voice, the hands of Esau have dominion; when his voice rings out clearly, the hands of Esau have no dominion.

R. Abba b. Kallana said: Never arose such great philosophers in the world as Balaam the son of Beor and Abnomos of Gadara All the heathens assembled before Abnomos and asked him: ‘ Think you that we can subjugate this people? ‘ ‘ Go round to their synagogues and schools,’ he replied, ‘ and if you find there children with voices uplifted you cannot subjugate them; if not, you can, for thus did their ancestor assure them, saying: THE VOICE IS THE VOICE OF JACOB: when the voice of Jacob rings out in the synagogues, Esau has no hands.’2
