"that the only distinction between contemporary society and the Messianic age is the subjugation of other nations (shi'bud malchiyut) (Hilkhot Melachim 12:2) 2"
So, we DO want to take over the world?

Shana: a better pun would be that, in that story, character development is not integral.

4. For a counter-example, see Calculus The Easy Way which tells the story of some fictional land where people just happen to get together to figure out the total area beneath a bending river. It's not as bad as it sounds, but I found it somewhat derivative.
Somewhat derivative..nice pun

Probably the best Jewish novel I have read recently has been "Book of Splendor" by Frances Sherwood. It is a historical fiction piece which centers around the Golem of Prague, but includes various historical figures, including Tyco Brahe.
On the other hand, if you like murder mysteries, you might want to consider Kinky Friedman's "Elvis, Jesus, and Coca-Cola", which could be counted as a Jewish novel I suppose, but in a profoundly secular sense. It sports characters with names such as Rambam. Anyhow, Jewish or not, it's a fun read.

My favorite Jewish novel read recently was "Joy Comes in the Morning," by Jonathan Rosen. The protagonist is a young (thirtyish) female Reform rabbi, and I found her incredibly real and congenial as a character. Not sure whether it would be your cup of tea, but thought I'd mention it, since it really did impress me a great deal. :-)
